The range covers most polishing applications and a wide range of materials. Please select the bar required from the drop down menu Grey 8/4 High Cut - Low shine - For cleaning and first stage polishing of Steel and Stainless Steel Bolpol Grey is a high cut, low sheen finish bar used for 1st stage polishing or cleaning of ferrous metals like Iron, Steel, Tool Steel and Stainless Steel and is ideal for the removal of rust, casting and grinding marks etc. For maximum stock removal use a sisal wheel, or a Stitched Cotton buffing wheel when a less abrasive cutting action is required. Blue 5/8 Medium cut - High shine - For cleaning and polishing Brass and CopperBolpol Blue is an excellent general purpose, silica free buffing bar primarily developed to produce a mirror bright finish on Copper, Brass, Bronze and non ferrous metals, but equally suited to polishing Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Chrome, Nickel plate and Zinc. Suitable for use with stitched, loose leaf and Sisal buffing wheels, it is also used with hard felt wheels for tool sharpening. bolpol Blue has become a popular choice in the automotive trade for polishing Aluminium and is widely used by the Military, Bushcrafters, Preppers and Scout groups for sharpening bushcraft and survival type knives in the field on a Leather Strop. To use bolpol Blue on a leather strop simply rub the bar on the rough side of the leather, then hold the bevel of the knife against the leather while pushing from left to right for a minute or two to achieve a razor sharp polished edge. bolpol Blue has become more widely known worldwide on youtube as " Smurf Poo ". Green 7/8 High Cut - High Shine - For cleaning and polishing Stainless Steel Bolpol Green is regarded as a multi stage compound with a high cut and also a high shine which produces a mirror bright finish on very hard materials like Stainless Steel, High Carbon Steel and Tool Steel. Green compound is generally used with a close stitched cotton wheel for general polishing but may be used with a sisal wheel for extreme surface preparation or a loose leaf wheel where shine is of greatest importance. Green is also commonly used on both felt wheels and leather power strops for tool sharpening and by the trade to polish Coral. White 3/9 Low Cut - Ultra high Mirror bright finish - For polishing AluminiumBolpol White is used for fine scratch removal and to produce a mirror bright, high gloss finish on Aluminium, Chrome, Nickel plate, Zinc and Brass. Use with Stitched Cotton buffing wheels or a loose leaf pattern buffing wheel. Bolpol White is the preferred choice for polishing Aluminium and Chrome as it produces a cleaner non greasy cut. Bolpol White is also used by jewellers for 1st stage polishing of platinum, hence why it is also known as White Rouge. Yellow 4/7 Medium cut - High shine - For polishing hard plasticsBolpol Yellow is for final stage polishing of hard plastics & resins and can be used with a either stitched cotton or loose leaf pattern buffing wheel. Yellow buffing bars are popular with woodturners (for polishing acrylic resin pens) and modelmakers. Bolpol Yellow is now the prefered choice of the plastics industry for low speed 2nd stage polishing of Cellulose Acetate, Phenol-urea, Melamine Formaldehyde Resins and other hard plastics. Also suitable for light polishing of lacquer resin finishes. Cream 5/9 Medium Cut - Ultra High Mirror bright finish - For high and low speed polishing, ideal for cordless drills.Bolpol Cream was developed for the plastics industry as an ultra high gloss finish for polishing Lacquers, Polyester, Nitro Cellulose, Cellulose Acetate, Phenol-urea, Melamine Formaldehyde Resins. Used by boat builders for final polishing Fibreglass and by woodturners and carvers to highly polish exotic hardwoods, Buffalo horn and Tortoiseshell. Bolpol Cream is also used by knife makers to polish high carbon and Stainless steel blades and scales to a mirror bright finish and in the motor trade to polish scratches from plastic headlamps. Rouge ( Jewellers Rouge ) 1/9 Ultra low Cut - Ultra high Mirror bright finish Bolpol Rouge is the finest quality Jewellers rouge which gets its colour from the abrasive, and not a dye like the other compounds. Used by Jewellers all over the World to polish Gold, Silver, Pewter, Nickel Plate, Platinum, soft metals and Glass. A traditional high quality Jewellers Rouge which produces an ultra fine, slow cut while enhancing the colour of Gold. Brown 7/7 High Cut - Medium High Shine Brown has both a high cut and produces a medium high level of bright sheen. Used as a multi stage cleaning and polishing bar on a wide range of materials, it is primarily intended as a 1st stage polish on non ferrous metals like Brass, Copper, Aluminium and Gold, it is also widely used for 1st stage polishing of hard plastics and resins like: Cellulose Acetate, Phenol-urea and Melamine Formaldehyde Resins, Fibreglass, Bakelite, horn and hardwoods. Pink 4/8 Medium Cut - High ShinePink has a medium cut and high shine and is used for final stage high polishing of Chrome. Which bar type do you need? Each polishing bar in the bolpol range is different, its has a different cutting and polishing ability to suit different types of material, its not simply a different colour. The bar colour is just the easy way to identify the type of bar. What do the two numbers next to the bar colour mean? example Grey 8/4 or Cream 5/9 The numbers next to the bar are the score or rating number of the bar out of 10, all bolpol bars are rated from a score of 1 and 10. Number 1 being low, whilst 10 is very high. The first number is called " The Cut " the higher the number the rougher the abrasive and the more stock (material) will be cut / removed from the workpiece. ( 10 being very rough ) The second number is the " The Gloss " or Sheen or how much shine the compound could give on a prepared surface, the higher this number the higher the level gloss shine will be. (10 being ultra high Gloss) 10/1 = Most stock removal / least shine - semi bright or lined finish1/10 = Least stock removal / most shine - fully bright or mirror finish These Buffing bars colours in the bolpol range are traditionally associated with specific polishing tasks, but the actual colour means nothing whatsover, (apart from our Jewellers Rouge) and is only a dye colour used to easily identify each type of buffing bar. The term "Cut and Colour" in the trade, means to "cut back" the material to its original colour. Why not give a grit rating instead? Many people have asked why not simply do a grit rating like sandpaper - for example 400 grit or 600 grit and the higher the number the smoother the grit. That sounds great in theory, but in simplistic terms it does not work. Different bars have different types of abrasive powders to make them most effective on specific materials and, while there is some fluidity in the materials they may be used on, the grit rating will be greater on a soft material to a hard material - A good example of this will be the Brown (Tripoli) bar and, although this has a high cut rating, the abrasives used are relatively soft in comparison to the Green bar, which has a similar rating. The brown compound is intended for use on relatively soft materials (brass, copper, plastics, resins, etc.) while the green is intended for use on steel; using the green on the softer materials will greatly increase the effect of the abrasives while using the brown on hard materials like steel reduces the effect of the abrasives. Another factor which effects the abrasive qualities of the compound is the type of wheel it is combined with, and also the speed of the wheel and the pressure applied when polishing. The green bar is a good example to use, as this is classed as a multi-stage bar capable of surface preparation and final glossing, and changing the wheel with which it is used changes the abrasive qualities. Using a coarse sisal wheel will greatly increase the amount of material removed while doing little to add shine, while a close stitched cotton wheel will remove less material and add some shine. Changing to a loose leaf calico wheel removes the least material but greatly improves the shine.
